Can you tell me, when did you complete your PhD and how many years did it take?
OK. I completed in 2006. It took me about six years because I was full-time for the first couple and then I was very much part time down to even a day a week for the next four. Far too long.
And how old were you when you started?
I was 30.
And how did you fund your study?
I had some kind of scholarship but it was combined with teaching, and that mainly paid for what I needed to survive. I also had some other work which was more work for love and if anything the teaching and scholarship funded that rather than the other way round oddly enough.
Did you work before the PhD?
Yes I had, I actually started life doing something completely different. I was an engineer briefly and then I was teaching in a philosophy department before the PhD as well.
And did you have to overcome any significant obstacles before embarking on the PhD?
Only in my own head really as far as giving myself permission to spend that amount of time on one thing and also just getting to the point of feeling that this is what I wanted to do. Other than that, financially, I knew that that was going to be an obstacle in the sense of I would be committing to years of being poor, but that's fine. I was happy with that.
