When you embarked on the PhD did you envisage an academic career? 

I probably did but I'm not sure I envisaged it in a sort of 'this is my ultimate goal' sort of way. It was probably just 'well if I do a PhD that is probably the natural way to go.'  And so, you know, in a very kind of passive sense I did it wasn't the outcome of an examination of exactly what I wanted and a conclusion that that was the best option.
