Helen considers the relationship between her PhD and her subsequent career.
Do you feel that you're using your PhD research area or the PhD experience directly or indirectly in your current position?
Not really no, so I think the main benefit to me of having done the PhD is that it’s given me status among other people who do work in academia and it’s given me status, particularly among contacts in China, but in terms of the actual content of the research that I was doing for the PhD, that has been neither here nor there in my career.
It’s one topic of conversation when people want to find out what I did, but the actual experience of having done that research was not that relevant.
Teaching experience and public speaking, giving lectures maybe has been useful because I do have to do some public speaking and preparing of PowerPoints and presentations, but that could have been trained by other sources than a PhD.
