Have you got any advice for people who are coming towards the end of their PhD who are thinking about pursuing an academic career but who might have some anxieties or uncertainties about whether it is the way that they want to go?

I think, obviously, it might depend on the kinds of things they have been doing alongside their PhD. I mean if they have been teaching and they enjoy it then I think academia is what they should be doing. If they have been teaching and haven't enjoyed it they could still pursue the idea of academia but they would have to think very carefully about the kind of institution and role they might take on within that. If they are very research focused and perhaps actually – within Arts and Humanities it is quite difficult to do so but – maybe they should be looking for some kind of research project to join, I mean these are becoming more prevalent I think in our area but which are the norm in science of course. But I think it is a big step and I think one of the best things you can do is talk to people and talk to obviously a supervisor but also get other perspectives because there are some people up there who are very jaded and have very negative opinions about some of the roles they are required to undertake as an academic. And so you know when you go to conferences just to try and get contact with as many people as possible and just see what kind of attitudes they have towards their jobs I think that is important.
